How can I improve my spelling?

  1. Learn as you meet new words. Learn the spelling of all new vocabulary in your text book at the same time as you learn the meaning. Then get someone each week to test you can spell the new words, or test yourself.
  2. Review the new vocabulary at the end of your course. There is often a vocabulary list at the end of the book. There may also be a list of vocabulary/spellings to learn for your exam.
  3. Learn the most common words below. Get a friend to test you.
  4. Learn common spelling patterns e.g. -sion -tion -ment
  5. Learn spelling rules.
  6. Notice how the sounds within the words are made. Are they phonetic (as you would imagine)?
  7. Learn to avoid the most common spelling mistakes that Saudis make.
  8. Learn to spell the English words most commonly misspelled.
  9. Copy the words from questions or prompts correctly.
  10. Check your spelling after you finish writing.

Noticing how the word sounds are made

Notice how the sounds within the words are made. Are they phonetic (as you would imagine)? Can you hear all the the sounds clearly? The*shows the sound is not clear. Try to spell the word from the sound. Then notice how the correct spelling is different.

Notice the silent letters. There are underlined here.

How is the sound made? How is the /oo/ sound made: oo , o,  u , ue,  ew , ough ?

How is the /sk/ sound made: sk , sc,  sch ?

How does the word sound to?      How is it spelled?

/rite/?                                                  write

/bloo/?                                                 blue

/stud*nt/?                                           student

/teecha/?                                            teacher

/werk/?                                               work

/work/?                                               walk

/peeple/                                              people

/rest*ront/?                                       restaurant?

/orthor*ty/?                                      authority/

/univercity/                                      university

Another way I use to remember the spellings is my memorizing the phonetic or apparent (not actual) sound of words that I find are harder to spell correctly..

Actual spelling                Sounds used to memorize actual spelling.

friend                                /fri-end/  so there is an “i” after the “r”

height                               /he-ig-ht/

beautiful                         /be-au-tiful/
